THEATRE

Theatre History I:

This class explores the evolution of theatrical performance from its origins in primitive ritual to the improvisational commedia dell'arte during the Renaissance. It includes the study of Egyptian, Greek, Roman and medieval theatre. Although this course is academically demanding, course content will be supported and enriched by student written performances, presentations and projects. Recommended for grades 7 & 8.

 

Theatre History II:

Picking up where Theatre History I left off, this course will examine the evolution of the theatrical performance from Shakespeare's time to the present. Although, this course is academically demanding, course content will be supported and enriched by student written performances, presentations and art projects. Recommended for grades 7 and 8.

 

Voice and Movement:

This course focuses on the relationship between the Voice and the Body. This course will challenge the actor to improve the quality of his/her voice. It will also help the actor develop pliable and limber bodies to sustain a myriad of characters. This class will also serve the purpose of some rehearsals for the Fall Play. All actors in the Fall play must enroll.

 

Improvisation:

This course will cover the basic elements of improvisation: spontaneity, learning to negotiate on stage, and reincorporation. Students will learn to problem solve and "think on their feet". Improvisation is a serious study of theatre that will greatly improve an actor's skills.

 

Drama and Social Issues (7th and 8th grade):

This course will explore current events and popular social issues through improvisation, role-playing and dramatic readings. Students will learn the process of playwrighting to effectively create scenes that delve into social issues. Students will get an opportunity to present a social issue of their choice.

 

Musical Theatre:

This course is required for those who have auditioned and accepted parts in the Spring Musical. This course focuses on skills needed to take a production from audition to performance. Teamwork skills are also emphasized. Students will become familiar with various aspects of a production including but not limited to stage direction, character development, props, costumes, lighting, make-up and set-design. This class will also be used for rehearsal.

 

Intro to Film/Documentary:

This will be a class that introduces students to the basic principles of filmmaking, the language/terminology often used in the industry, and the process of making a documentary. Students will work together to create a documentary. They will help set the storyline, crew the project, edit the project, design the posters and enter the project into various film festivals around the country.
